Need of smaller states to curb crime rate
Despite steps taken by the Central government and the state governments post the horrific gang rape and murder case of Nirbhaya at Delhi, the rape cases are increasing like anything particularly in UP. There have been rape cases in Lucknow, Badaun, Kanpur and other districts.

SP supremo, Mulayam Singh, whose party is ruling UP, had given a very controversial statement which was in bad taste viz., that there are lesser rape cases in UP considering its population.

This has been severely criticised by the members of the National Commission for Women, Neelam Kataria, the Social Activist and Rita Bahuguna Joshi, the Congress leader.

However, after thinking over it with some patience, I think what Mr Singh wants to portray is also true, though it was ''nonsense'' statement. UP is really a very big state having a population of 21 crores which is more than that of Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. and slightly less than that of Indonesia. It is very difficult to manage such a huge state and control crime.

As suggested very ably by Mulayam Singh's arch opponent, former Chief Minister, Ms. Mayawati of UP, we need to break UP into 4 states for better management and hence crime control. I also feel the same that we also need to divide unwieldy states like Maharashtra, etc. for better administration.

The Central Government needs to form a States Reorganisation Commission, which should study all the details and suggest the formation of smaller states to not only administer the states better but meet the aspiration of the people of the various regions of the states. This Commission can also consider Central State relations afresh.
